This year leading up to THREE has held big things for Liam. It has held learning to use new equipment. It has held getting so very close to taking his first steps entirely on his own. It has held seasons of freedom from seizures. It has held increases in so many developmental areas. It has held making new friends and getting to know new therapists. It has held laughter, typical toddler behaviors and emotions, and lots and lots of hugs.
It has held more things than I can list, ranging from all the extremes of good and not-so-good. But the thing that stands out the most about this year is that it has held confidence.
Liam, you have grown in so many ways this year but the foundation each one of them has been built upon is your growth in confidence.
We have watched you become increasingly confident – in the determination to communicate, in the bravery of moving your body in new ways, in the challenge of getting to know and trust new people. You have become more confident and aware of what you want, more confident that you can get where you want to go, and more confident that others can understand what you are telling them. You operate with a confidence in what you do not want and what you do not like, as equally as in what you do.
You are confident to be you. To love stars, books, and firetrucks. To love being outside and watching the trees move in the breeze. To love to get rides from your cousins in their PowerWheels car. To love splashing with great delight in any body of water. To give hugs and tell your stories and laugh from deep down inside your belly. To appreciate the detail and beauty of things most of us don’t notice – like the pattern on a rug or the backsplash in Mimi and Papa’s kitchen or the shadow trees make on the ground.
My prayer for you, Liam, is that you would continue to grow not only in confidence of what you are capable of, but in your confidence of what our God is capable of. That you, our strong-willed warrior, would be unmoving in your trust in Him. I pray each day we would model that for you. He loves you so very much, and He has great plans for you!
I’m so glad we get to walk this journey together. You are a gift beyond words.
“I waited patiently for the Lord, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help. He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and they will trust in the Lord.” (Psalms 40:1-3 CSB, emphasis mine)
We are fully convinced, Liam, that what He has promised, He is also able to do (Romans 4:20 CSB, paraphrased). We are so delighted in you, and we are so confident in YOU! We love you immensely. We are excited for THREE!
And a little note for those of you who are reading this… I hope that as you are witnessing Liam’s journey, even to a small degree, that you will be built up in your confidence as well. God is for you. He loves you. He is working.
